ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Hadi, AH 169-170 / AD 785-786. Hemidrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 1.41 g, 4 h), Tabaristan, citing governor Mihran, PYE 135 = AH 169 = AD 786. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing an elaborate crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘Mihrān’ (‘Mihran’ in Arabic); in outer margin to left and right, ‘nywk' ˗ ʾp̄d’ (‘good ˗ wonderful’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar, flanked by two attendants; above altar, two pellets; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, ‘tpwlstʾn’ (‘Tabaristan’ in Pahlavi). Album 62. Very rare. Areas of weakness and with some corrosion and porosity, otherwise, very fine.
